1. What is Wired & Wireless at Ashmore Campus, Gold Coast Institute of TAFE?

Wired & Wireless at Ashmore Campus, Gold Coast Institute of TAFE, is a service that allows students using the wired ports and wireless enabled laptops to connect to the institute network.

2. Where can I access Wired & Wireless at Ashmore Campus, Gold Coast Institute of TAFE?

The 7 Wired ports at Ashmore Campus, Gold Coast Institute of TAFE, are located in Block 'A' Learn Centre.

The Wireless at Ashmore Campus, Gold Coast Institute of TAFE, is available in Block 'C' Gymnasium and Block 'A' Courtyard and Canteen area.

3. What services are available for me to access as a Gold Coast Institute of TAFE student?

 

A Gold Coast Institute of TAFE student using Wired & Wireless at Gold Coast Institute of TAFE can access network files on H/group drive, access the Internet and print.

4. What do I need to connect to the Wired & Wireless network at Gold Coast Institute of TAFE?

System 
Minimum Requirements
Disk space 30 MB
Hardware Pentium III 500 MHz (minimum), wireless network card with a driver that supports NDIS 5.1 (wireless card should have the Wi-Fi Alliance stamp or logo) 
Memory 128-MB RAM
Software Windows XP (Home or Pro) SP1/SP2, Windows 2000 Pro SP4, Internet Explorer 5.0

5. How do I enable my wireless adapter?

Software

On most laptops you can enable/disable wireless by using the Function+F2 shortcut key. (This may be a different combination on some laptops, like Function+F8). The Function key is usually identified with Fn and the wireless key usually has a wireless symbol on it. Pleas refer to your laptop manual for further information.

Hardware

There may be a physical wireless button or switch located on the side of some laptops.  Ensure that it is turned on.  This button or switch will usually have a wireless symbol on it and will light up when pressed. Please refer to your laptop manual for further information.

6. Can I access my network storage files on H drive?

Yes, students have secure access to their network H drive folder.

7. Can I access my network storage files on Group drive?

Yes, students have secure access to their network Group drive folder.

8. Is wireless printing available to students on Wired & Wireless at Gold Coast Institute of TAFE?

Yes, students have access to the Wireless printing service at the Ashmore Campus. 

The software and installation requirements are available from the printing for Wired & Wireless page.

9. Can I use Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), Apple Macintosh or Microsoft Windows Vista computers to connect to the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE network?

Although these devices may detect Wired & Wireless at the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE network, we do not have a Cisco Secure Services Client that is compatible with these devices at this stage.

10. How do I get support when I have issues?

11. Is there support for operating systems in languages other than English?

No, there is no support for operating systems in languages other than English.

12. Which software applications interfere with the functioning of the Cisco Secure Services Client software?

The following applications can cause problems for the Cisco Secure Services Client software and prevent it from successfully connecting into the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE network.

a. Peer to Peer software used for uploading and downloading data to and from the  Internet.
b. Firewall and Internet security applications.
c. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) applications.
  
If the Cisco Secure Services Client is unable to connect, we recommend that you temporarily disable or switch off these applications and try to connect the Cisco Secure Services Client again.

13. What do I do when my laptop is connected to the Wired & Wireless network at Gold Coast Institute of TAFE and the Web Browser page does not open?

a. Check Web Browser settings; refer to user guide [PDF 1.01mb].
b. Temporarily disable or switch off your personal firewall software, disconnect the Cisco Secure Services Client, then re-connect the Client and try to access the Internet again.

14. What do I do when my laptop is connected to the Wired & Wireless network at Gold Coast Institute of TAFE and I cannot access the Internet?

Ensure that you have installed the Cisco Secure Services Client software and successfully connected to the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE network.

15. What do I do when my laptop is connected to the Wired & Wireless network at Gold Coast Institute of TAFE and the Cisco Secure Services Client software is also connected but I still cannot access the Internet?

a. Check Web Browser settings; refer to user guide [PDF 1.01mb].
b. Temporarily disable or switch off your personal firewall software, disconnect the Cisco Secure Services Client, then re-connect the client and try to access the Internet again.

16. How do I get a fast connection to the Wireless network at Gold Coast Institute of TAFE?

a. Ensure you are located within one of the Wired & Wireless zones [PDF 463kb].  If you are in a Wireless zone the data will transmit at its maximum speed.  If you are located outside a Wireless zone the speed will be slower and your wireless connection may also drop out. 
b. If you are located in a Wireless zone and the speed is still slow, try re-starting your laptop and connect back into the Wireless network at Gold Coast Institute of TAFE.
c. If this does not work, try moving to a different spot within the Wireless zone or move to a different Wireless zone.

17. How do I protect my laptop from viruses when it is connected to Wired & Wireless at Gold Coast Institute of TAFE?

The Department of Education, Training and the Arts and the State of Queensland disclaim all responsibility and all liability (including without limitation, liability in negligence) for all expenses, losses, damages and costs you might incur as a result of using your personal computer device for this access. This includes any computer malfunction, infection by computer viruses or other damage.

We strongly recommend that you install anti-virus and anti-spyware software on your laptop and keep it regularly updated.

You will have to delete any drive mapping scripts off the desktop from any previous connections.  Also make sure you are looking at the right tab in the TConnect page.
