Early notice of your disability
If you have a disability that may impact on your learning at Gold Coast Institute of TAFE, please make early contact with our Disability Officer so that the support that you may need can be negotiated and organised.
You can give us early notice of your disability. If you are applying through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre to study at the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE you will be sent a questionnaire to complete and a copy of your response will be sent to our Disability Officer. All information provided is confidential.
If you are applying directly to the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE you can advise us of your disability through your enrolment details.
Once you enrol directly with Gold Coast Institute of TAFE and indicate on the enrolment form that you have a disability, it is up to you to initiate contact with the Disability Officer if you wish to discuss your support needs.
Supporting documentation
It is important that you provide supporting documentation which identifies the nature of your disability and the way in which it may impact on your studies. This documentation will help the Disability Officer to give you the most appropriate support for your disability.
Maintaining contact
It is important that you maintain contact with the Disability Officer during your studies. As your subjects change, you may need to review the support that you require. The Disability Officer can assist you with this.
If you experience any difficulties at any stage during your course of study, please contact the Disability Officer.
Types of support
The Disability Officer can assist by:
-
talking with you regarding your specific requirements
-
liaising with teachers so there is an understanding of your needs
-
locating and organising equipment and specialist personnel where possible
Access around campus
Wheelchair access is available to most buildings on our four campuses. To check the access to your classroom or other facilities please contact the Disability Officer.
Adaptive equipment
Gold Coast Institute of TAFE has a small collection of adaptive equipment available for students.
Emergency Evacuation
In the rare event of an emergency evacuation it is your responsibility to do the following:
- identify the closest exits and the meeting area
- please do not use the lift if there is a fire
- wait at the nearest set of stairs if you cannot use the stairs. Advise other people that you are waiting there and the fire fighters will rescue you.
If you would like assistance in an evacuation, talk with your teacher and others in your class to arrange a buddy system.
Individual support
As an enrolled student please contact us as soon as possible so that you can get the assistance you require.
Interpreters
A sign language interpreter can be arranged for students with a hearing disability.
Libraries
All Learn Centres are accessible. If high shelves and photocopiers are a difficulty, ask the staff for assistance. If you would like a support worker to help you in the Learn Centre, please talk to the Disability Officer to arrange this.
Notetaker
A notetaker can be arranged to work with a student with a disability which prevents note-taking.
Parking
Parking spaces are available at all campuses for people with the Queensland Transport Disability Parking Permit. If you need one of these parking spaces on a temporary basis, please speak to the Disability Officer.
Personal support
Support can be provided to students with a physical disability to assist in the Learn Centre and other institute facilities.
Contact us
The Disability Officer can meet with you at any of the four campuses: Ashmore, Coolangatta, Ridgeway and Southport. To make an appointment with the Disability Officer email GCIT Disability support or please contact Student services.
