Education and Training Reforms for the Future (ETRF) initiatives
National and international research indicates that young people who participate in twelve years of learning are more likely to be better qualified. This educational foundation leads to an increased chance of participating in the world of work and becoming an active member of society.
Vision Statement
"All young Queenslanders will participate in one of the most flexible education and training systems in Australia, achieving results at the standard required for a positive future of multi-skilling, adaptability, employment and life-long learning".
In November 2002, the Queensland Government released Queensland the Smart State - Education and Training Reforms for the Future: A White Paper. A copy can be downloaded from http://education.qld.gov.au/etrf/.
The White Paper outlines the Government's future policy direction for education and training. The package covers all stages of education from preschool through to middle and senior schooling, as well as vocational education and training, and employment.
The overarching aim of the strategy is for all young Queenslanders to obtain at least a Senior Certificate or Certificate III vocational qualification. The ETRF: A White Paper details reforms which focus on:
- better preparation for children before they enter school
- a new approach to the middle years of school to focus on students' learning needs
- flexible opportunities for 15, 16 and 17 year olds to achieve a Senior Certificate or vocational education qualification
- strengthening overall standards of achievement and attainment
- fostering a community commitment to young people.
Where does Gold Coast Institute of TAFE fit in?
We are working closely with both the Gold Coast North and Gold Coast South District Youth Achievement Plan Management Committees to establish collaborative programs. These initiatives will encourage young people to remain interested and focused on learning and/or earning.
Examples of successful local initiatives include a program running from the Silver Bridle Community Centre and one designed in conjunction with Miami SHS. The programs are great examples of what can be accomplished by working more closely with our educational partners to achieve improved outcomes for the region's young people.
